Courage to learn about slavery
Like the historians and hosts of Following Harriet, I learned just a blurb about her life in school. My first real introduction to this larger than life woman, was from watching the movie Harriet. I was engrossed, and immediately driven to learn more. Although I’ve read W.E.B du Bois, The Souls of Black Folk, a bit of Martin Luther King, Black no More, and book that’s driving me crazy because I can’t remember the title about a black musician that is light skinned, decides to pass as white, marries a white woman and later tells that he’s black. I’ve steered away from more knowledge about the brutal truth about slavery because it’s painful, it hurts my soul. I was recently shamed by an African American woman when I shared the pain I feel. What stopped me in my tracks was I was watching The Color Purple as a young woman. I was utterly and completely traumatized! It’s taken me 25 years to approach slavery again with du Bois’ The Souls of Black Folk. His work helped me open up to discover more, and learning about Harriet Tubman is the result, As a white woman with Scottish and German ancestors that settled in the Midwest in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s, (none of my ancestors owned slaves), will I ever understand the black point of view and pain? No. But, I want to try to understand and be better educated on the subject. Back to the podcast, I appreciated it being told from an objective point of view. I was able to learn and empathize, feel terrible but not break down with gut wrenching grief. It’s a brilliant introduction to Harriet Tubman! I highly recommend listening!
