Listen now
Description
Those with Down Syndrome are more likely to have Celiac Disease. A study in the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition 71(2):p 252-256, August 2020. | DOI: 10.1097/MPG.0000000000002742 identified a high (9.8%) prevalence of celiac disease in children with Down syndrome when routine screening practices were implemented in the Down syndrome clinic starting in 2011. Overall, 82% of these children with celiac disease were diagnosed by screening in the referral clinic. Without the practice of routine screening in the specialty clinic, the vast majority of cases would not have been detected in routine visits from primary care.  In honor of World Down Syndrome Day on March 21st, please share this article with anyone you know who loves or cares for someone with Downs.
