Listened to most of the Pope and the Emperor episode and it was not great. The way the investiture crisis was discussed weirdly veered between assuming one knows nothing or next to nothing about the topic and then acting like we can just hit some highlights and giggle about them. I learned about...Read full review »

I have to agree with other reviewers who commented on Dr. Janega’s presentation style. She is so sophmoric and jokey as to be unlistenable. I suppose she thinks she is funny, but I don’t find her so. Matt is great. I just skip the Tuesday episodes.

I love ALL the hosts on this show, I have gained so much from their knowledge and passion. Thank you!

This series is like two different podcasts. The shows hosted by Matt Lewis are usually awesome. But the ones hosted by Eleanor Janega are horrible. The topics are interesting, and the guests are interesting, but her presentation and tone and approach are just so appalling that I can hardly stand...Read full review »

Her delivery for a history podcast is laughable and immature. Her opinions are ridiculous. She would be better suited on an entertainment podcast talking gossip. She is ruining this show and it is apparent as the hosts work together on Henry II.

The topics are so varied, the hosts are so knowledgeable, engaging and their curiosity is infectious. An incredibly enjoyable podcast.

Started reading the comments to this podcast (one of my favorites) and was astonished at the negativity toward Dr. Janega. Her substantive knowledge is encyclopedic and her presentation style is modern, and refreshing. You go, girl! PS Matt Lewis is great too, and it is certainly telling that...Read full review »

*** Updating again once I saw there’s a series on Thomas Becket that I sadly can’t enjoy. I wish Dr. Janega’s presentation style matched her obvious intelligence and originality of contribution to the field of medieval studies. Unfortunately, her style comes off more as...Read full review »

Oof. I truly loved this podcast and there is still a lot to continue loving, with the exception of Eleanor Janega. I find episodes with her to be an auditory assault and I appear to not be the only one.

Love this show and have been listening to many of History Hits programs. I was just listening to the recent “St Barts” episode and just wanted to mention that Benjamin Franklin was not a President of the US. Thanks!

I’ve listened for about a year and find both the presenters are great. I love Eleanor! Some guests are better than others but I think sometimes I’m just more interested in some aspects of medieval life than others.

I enjoy this show so much… And the host is fine. She’s great. I would like to say, though I just listen to the episode about Pope Joan. I was astonished that no one pointed out that male popes spawned many illegitimate children. So what is the real issue? That would be an interesting discussion....Read full review »

To be honest it seems like all of you just hate women. I’ve seen reviews nitpicking anything and everything about her. And almost nothing about the other hosts, positive or negative. Chill out and think before you try to tell someone to talk less on a podcast that they in fact are a host of and...Read full review »

A bad host. Her shows largely consist of her saying things and then trying to get the guest to agree with her.

Some episodes are great, others are utterly dire (like bad university lectures). It’s always disappointing to find myself tuning out from a potentially interesting topic because it’s presented in such a dry way. I enjoy listening to Matt but unfortunately Eleanor continues to struggle with her...Read full review »

For those criticizing Eleanore’s accent…This is the result of her living in England for years now! Over time many people develop an accent of some kind. She’s not faking it. It’s a natural result of living abroad.

This podcasts presents information that may be new to some or old info presented in new context. The time spent listening has been worth it. The episodes confirm that human beings have always been human beings and always will be …… and yet we are still here! Thank you.

Hugely appreciate her engaging narrative style and the questions she poses to her guests, which are academic yet accessible. I love the topics on this show but I can’t listen to the co-host say “Fronce” repeatedly and stay focused on the content. It’s so bizarre and the fake Brit words seem to be getting worse each time!

• Host Catchphrase: “… Right?” ~ • EPISODE: No.270 St Nicholas, in which the guest is barely (and rarely) permitted to get a word in edgewise. ~ •EPISODE No.292 Sweyn Forkbeard: Unlistenable due to guest’s constant giggling. Annoying guest catchphrases: “… yeah …”; “kind of”; “sort of”. ~...Read full review »

Love the history hit podcasts and listen to all of them.. but. …. When i am listening and imagining say, medieval London or a siege or fierce warriors , settlements or castles, I find it a little jarring to have the “cool’s, ya’ll’s & dude’s ” interspersed by American narrators. Quitting this pod because of stupid music track. Not even real music. Annoying electronic blips and bleeps - what purpose does it serve? What purpose?

Does Eleanor just insist on inventing her own pronunciations? It doesn’t seem to matter whether it’s French or English, she’s got this infuriating habit of unnecessarily butchering words. It’s like listening to an American trying to sound English trying to speak French.

I am enthralled! Was looking for a good podcast about various medieval topics without any particular focus and this show delivers like no other. Episodes are just the right length and extremely informative, content is interesting and the guest are brilliant. An easy 5 star from me.

The Zoom audio quality makes the interviews sound like a workplace meeting. The episode topics look interesting but I’m not gonna listen to that.

I’m sure she is an absolutely lovely person but I’m afraid I agree with the other reviews re Eleanor Janega 😢 I find the same thing with Alison Lister on Betwixt the sheets 🫨😖: I just don’t come here for jaunty, sexy, funky talk - I just want the history and to listen to the expert with a...Read full review »

I love this pod. i always learn and I’m always entertained. One criticism: Dr Eleanor Janega, PLEASE —you’re 🦅 AMERICAN 🇺🇸 for gods sake. When we Americans try to use “shag” and “fancy” as verbs, it just…doesn’t work. The A in “rather” is short A, as is the one in the word “France.” Please...Read full review »

Just started listening - love the topics. However, the Black Death one had some odd sound issues. There was a bird cawing in background that was super distracting - I think it was on purpose - very odd. And do they edit or speed up all the normal gaps in conversation?
