Formula Student is a UK, national engineering competition in which universities design and build a race car. SAFE is an initiative to help students understand the marking criteria in order to enhance their overall grade. Both students and lecturers assess the work using the same rubric and the differences in the grades are analysed for the benefit of both the staff member and student alike. This system allows academician the USW Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science to keep a record of any assessments they are setting or their students are undertaking as part of their course. The system produces a calendar of assessments for the students once completely populated. The Assessment Calendar is updated by module leaders at the beginning of the year, and can be used as a planning tool by students, lecturers and course managers. In this Good Practice Exchange (GPE), Reader in Psychology Martin Graff talks about his evolving approach to the use of Turnitin for electronic assignment submission and GradeMark for online feedback and grading. Martin was an early adopter of these technologies, and over recent years has also made use of an iPad to aid the marking and grading process. In this Good Practice Exchange (GPE), Dr Trevor Price and Jacqui Neale demonstrate how a fresh approach to teaching enhanced the learning experience for Price’s students over the period 2008–13. It was based on a ‘learning activity design’ approach, together with the application of technology.
