Mark records Jesus’ life: His miracles, betrayal, death, resurrection, and commission. However, Mark’s Gospel is very brief and focuses more on things Jesus did than things Jesus said. Luke’s Gospel is the longest book in the New Testament. Being a detailed historian who researched everything, Luke tells Jesus’ story in extensive detail, more than any other Gospel.

Matthew’s opening verse makes it very clear what this book is about: Jesus, the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham. The purpose of John’s Gospel is most profoundly stated in John 20:30-31. This book is meant to awaken faith in unbelievers and to sustain the faith of those who already do believe, calling on all men to focus their eyes on the portrait of Jesus Christ and His saving work.

Hosea The problem was that Israel did not know their God (Hosea 4:1) and so God tells a man named Hosea to marry a prostitute. Hosea marries her but she leaves him and commits adultery. Then God tells him to go after her and bring her back. Hosea’s marriage is symbolic of God’s covenant relationship with Israel. God promised to exile His people from their land if they turned from Him, and now Jerusalem’s time has come. The people worshiped other gods, perverted justice in the land, and ignored His laws. As a result the Babylonians will destroy the city, raze the holy temple, leaving a heap of ashes and ruins as they carry the Jews away.

In the book of Daniel the Babylonians have attacked Jerusalem, taking many Jewish captives including Daniel. He is loyal to his God and wise beyond his years, being able to interpret visions and dreams. Daniel’s gifts testify of God’s sovereignty and His providential oversight of historical events in the time of the Old Testament.

In Ezekiel, the depths of Israel’s sin and rebellion are exposed. They have turned to the idols of the surrounding nations. When God had a message for the people, He spoke to them through prophets: men moved by the Holy Spirit to speak on God’s behalf Isaiah is the first of the Major Prophets. No other prophet is referenced in the New Testament as much as Isaiah who preaches of the coming King who will rule Israel and the nations in justice and peace. God’s judgment is coming, but so is a special Servant of God: one who will fulfil all Israel’s duties and bear their sins.

The book of Proverbs is a collection of various books of aphorisms, general truths. In the book, two different kinds of women are giving invitations: One is Lady Wisdom, a noble lady presenting wisdom, justice, and righteousness. The other is Dame Folly, enticing the simple.
