Funny and Introspective
Started listening because Gabrus' Gino the Intern character on Comedy Bang! Bang! is so goddamn good. There are a lot of great characters on CBB, but what made Gino stand out to me was not the character's premise, rather it was immediately obvious that whoever was doing this character is one of the quickest and most clever improv-ers I've ever heard. Those qualities certainly carry over to High and Mighty, though it's not just an hour of Gino every week - though I'd totally listen to that if he ever finds a radio station to be on - it has a lot more to offer. The episode topics are all over the place - movies, sex advice, fitness talk - but it's not overwhelming or distracting at all because Gabrus makes it all so personal and relatable. A central (or at least recurring) theme to the podcast is that Gabrus is sort of a jack of all trades/master of none, i.e., he's physically strong (for a comedian) and funny (for a meathead). Adding qualifiers like that is a super common coping mechanism for not feeling the best at something, but it isn't really talked about. I'm glad that someone is now and that that person is incredibly funny (for a comedian).Read full review »
