Des has done a superb job weaving together multiple narratives to tell the story of South Africa with all it nuance and subtlety that is often ignored with todays rhetoric. If anyone actually cares what happened to the country and how it became what it is, this is the podcast to listen to.

The podcast is a great scan of the historical events that lead up to the creation of the Union of South Africa on 31 May 1910. What I find encouraging is Des Latham’s use of chronological historical facts, sans political lens, to make a wearable and engaging narrative. This is no mean task! Well...Read full review »

Pretty much explodes all versions of history of South Africa. South Africans need to listen and learn as always history is always biased but ours is particularly biased and actively manipulated - mostly by non-historians. Start at the beginning or you will miss out. Very information dense but...Read full review »

I can’t stand this dramatising theatrical waffel with the thick afrikaanse accent ! Can this drama-guy not make an effort and pronounce African names correctly?!? Unlike so many historical podcasters, Latham has gone beyond the old and discredited “Great man” view of history. He works with broad historical patterns like a proper contemporary historian.

This is an exceptionally clear eyed account of history with facts to back it up. It moves aside the simple account of Southern African history many of us have and replaces it with the rich tapestry of the history of its people. A real gem.
