‘When hope was delivered by camel’
Always enjoy B & W, Jen, but this episode really was one out of the box. I found so many aspects of the story revelatory and very moving. My Dad was born and raised in Central Western Qld and he always spoke of how integral the Afghans were in helping set up households with essentials and items of comfort. Always referred to as Cameleers and Travellers, he always spoke of them with respect and noted their kindness in tough times particularly by extending credit and slipping lollies to the children who followed them from house to house around the town. Some married into the community and there are still families in my Dad’s hometown with Afghan surnames. Like the Truth Telling we are finally starting to accept as part of who we are, the role of the Afghans is also integral to our early colonial history - of the remote Outback in particular. I will certainly be picking up a copy of the book!

These podcasts are a quick, intriguing bite of the more nefarious side of Australia’s past. One of the better podcasts available.

A great podcast, I am surprised how much I love hearing about Melbourne’s history. I certainly wouldn’t say I’m “in” to history. But these little snippets into Melbourne’s (often) dark and interesting past is really awesome. I love hearing the passion of the guests. Keep up the good work ☺️.
