There is an interesting and important story to be followed here, the killing of thousands of people by those who trade in asbestos, yet the journalist lazily decides, after finding himself at personal odds with the whiste blower (Moore), to not believe him, and seeing a more complicated ...Read full review »

I tend to love the investigative journalism pieces released at tortoise, and this is no exception. Always interesting, high quality, well narrated. Like a lot though, I do find myself having to go back 5 minutes or so regularly each episode because I get a bit lost or confused!

I’m not sure what the point of this podcast is? There’s about 30 mins of material spread out over several hours. Just very dull and meandering. Also, if I hear the phrase ‘poison to medicine’ again, I’ll scream

Amazing podcast. Editorial and Production values extremely high.

Everything these people produce is excellent.

Overall I enjoyed this series a lot. I learned about corporate espionage, asbestos, and appreciated the nuanced exploration of what truth is. The one aspect I felt this series fell short is delving further into Rob’s side of the story. I didn’t really get to hear the perspectives of people who...Read full review »

I feel like the content of this podcast could have been presented better and it has the potential to be interesting. I found the format of this podcast messy and hard to follow without building any suspense and leaving the listener puzzled as to what the point is?
Jellytots94 via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 08/30/23
Beautifully produced and well worth a listening, but I’m left wondering why so much time is devoted to one flawed man’s (Moore’s) complex and self-aggrandizing response to a (partly self-created) moral quandary, and so little time is devoted to the underlying systems in which that man was...Read full review »

Rob just seems Naïve, I think it’s unfair to criticise someone for taking a paying job. The podcast host comes across as sanctimonious, and judgemental. If you ask someone to make a documentary about how your life was totally destroyed don’t you think you would want to ‘control the narrative’ ?!...Read full review »

I’m going back in a bit and I will let you know if you want me to bring you some more food to eat and I’ll bring you a salad and then bring you back home

An interesting story, but I’m shocked at how the narcissistic “spy” is given so much leeway to recreate his story once he’s been caught. He’s a performer and a liar, and comes across as desperate to stay relevant.

Great journalism! Amazing podcast!

Maybe a lot more attention from me was required, but I was left thinking it was all about Rob and very little about what he uncovered or said he did. Is it because the story was meant to be about him? Or because the information he had had no substance?

Investigative journalism and storytelling at its best.
HPP@1964 via Apple Podcasts · France · 08/06/23
The person to whom you’re referring to – writer of “Unkind” - is most likely writing under a pseudonym …it’s probably Rob himself 😳
Morris Disco via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 08/03/23
While the subject of the podcast is completely deluded, the treatment, which drags out a thin story to breaking point makes this a listen in which you will beg for something to happen. Instead, the constant repetition and retreading just detract from an already sketchy story.

Scanty attention is given to the victims of asbestos. It’s all about Rob. And Rob is a narcissist
annabelle pots via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 07/26/23
As the podcast progresses Rob is slowly revealed to be a deluded narcissist who is desperately trying to control the narrative. Culminating in a child-like whining tantrum in final episode. Given this I thought the host did well to keep the story (and Rob) under control. He would have been...Read full review »

I cannot believe another reviewer has described this man as a pretty friendly chap who is inept- he is the absolute epitome of narcissistic. He’s a bright and intelligent guy whose ego got the better of him and behaved appallingly and continues to do so. I would have liked to hear more from the...Read full review »

What exactly was the story here? It's a non-story. Rob comes across as a somewhat inept corporate spy – but a pretty decent chap who became swept up in a situation beyond his imagining – and appeared to be genuinely fearful. However it seems to me that because he did not play ball with the...Read full review »

Actually, I think the podcast is a bit unbalanced. As listeners we don’t hear much about Rob’s friends perspective. I don’t think Rob is a saint but I do think his side deserves more or a voice so readers could decide for themselves rather than almost be told his decisions were naive. We get...Read full review »

I’m a big fan of Tortoise but I had some issues with this show. I found the first several episodes very hard to follow. I also wish there had been an explanation for how Tortoise was able to publish this podcast if Rob Moore withdrew his consent partway through. Finally, and in my view, the...Read full review »

The story itself and the first couple of episodes are really interesting. But after that, a bit like Rob, it promises much but doesn’t really deliver. It’s so repetitive - real shame because it could have been brilliant.

… and then seems to go round and round in circles (which may have been the truth of the story, but not a very interesting listen by the end)
radio4atemyhamster via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 07/14/23
Seems like interviewer is out to get the Rob character and present in negative way. Maybe sometimes certain actions are required in certain circumstances

Starts off really well and is an interesting story. The next 3 episodes are just repetition

Incredibly storytelling, immersive sound design, fascinating series
MDMD2191 via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 07/09/23
I love the style of reporting… but by episode 6 there is still zero discussion of what Rob did to benefit for the anti asbestos cause while he took a huge salary from K2. It feels like the reporter is manufacturing the morale dilemma. It would be more interesting from the campaigner’s perspective.
Ashleyberyl via Apple Podcasts · New Zealand · 07/06/23
Really interesting story. What a narcissist he is. Rob finds ways to make excuses for all of his deception. He wanted to keep getting paid, he was enjoying all the travel and meeting nice people. Why an adventure it was for him. But trying to claim Buddhism somehow endorses his deception is...Read full review »

So far so good. Like many Tortoise poddies it hooks you with its intelligent, well-crafted, one in a million stories. Give me the next episode already!

Totally absorbing, intelligent and well reported. Can’t wait for the next episode. One of the most gripping podcasts I’ve listened to.

I was excited about this one. But when you say that most of the Steele dossier turned out to be true, you showed your bias. That’s simply untrue. Had to unsubscribe.

This is another superb podcast series from Tortoise. Ceri Thomas is fantastic and narrates in a way that is compelling and keeps you gripped throughout each and every episode. Seriously recommend, a well spent couple of hours which leaves you wanting more
