A bit too patronizing, vocal fry doesn’t bother me
I’ve given this podcast a few trials and I can’t get over how explicitly the writers feel the need to hit you over the head with their point, making sure you really heard everything. Really great podcasts like Radiolab and This American Life will play you a clip from an interview without comment and you are trusted to understand the implication. Invisibilia will play the clip, repeat the phrase they want you to notice, then tell you what it means. It feels incredibly patronizing and condescending. They also beat any point they’re trying to make into the ground, and have a flair for pretentious descriptions that just seem too self-satisfied. It’s a shame because they do good reporting and come up with interesting stories. They just seem to truly to oversell the meaning of each. A lot of reviewers are howling about the vocal fry, but I guess it doesn’t bother me. I’ve heard Elise Spiegel (sp?) on TAL and she seemed fine there as well.
