This story relates to a small fishing community of Bani Isra’il, during this time, because of their persistent disobedience and stubbornness, Allah decreed many injunctions against them, one of these injunctions was the observance of the sabbath where they completely prohibited from doing any work, it meant that they were not allowed to fish on Saturdays.

A story of a man who had two gardens which produced the best of fruits, he became haughty and arrogant and told his friend, I think this will never perish, while his friend said: praise god for the bounty he has given you, one should whole-heartedly accept the advice of his compassionate brother, as in rejecting his counsellor advice there rests complete destruction and perfect ruin.

The protagonists in this story are a small number of youths, who were the sons of rulers and noblemen. They were of the elite class, and accustomed to lives of comfort and luxury. Even so, they realized that their townspeople were immersed in wrongful practices, Allah caused them to enter into a slumber in the narrow chamber of the cave, a miraculous sleep that lasted for centuries.

Their father had a garden and used to give a portion of his harvest to the poor. When he died, the children did not want to continue on that path so they decided to wake up early and pack up the harvest while the rest of the world slept to prevent the poor people from getting the harvest. Iblis was proud and arrogant and considered himself superior to Adam, since Adam was made from clay and Iblis from smokeless fire. For this act of disobedience, Allah cursed him but gave him respite until the Day of Judgment, after Iblis requested it. Iblis obtained permission from Allah and vowed that he would use this time to lead all human men and women astray.

Al-Isra’ Wal-Mi’raj (the Night Journey & Ascension) is a miracle second only to the revelation of the Qur’an, and it is therefore important that we don’t let this night slip by without reflecting on its lessons and its significance.
