High-Level Infotainment
Update, March 2021: The Sohla interview was really hard to get through. I have followed the Bon Appétit saga closely, and I have watched Sohla on YouTube, but this interview just made me really dislike her. She constantly contradicted herself, and it was infuriating. I’m sure most of the NPR audience was on board with it, but it’s ridiculous to claim that food belongs to one group or another. Another example of cultural criticism cloaked in lazy claims of “racism.” This is getting out of hand, and shouldn’t be promoted. Get a grip. Good "starter" podcast for a lighthearted recap of the week. The Friday episodes lightly touch on a few headlines, but otherwise, not much analysis. This format is probably intentional, so in that sense, the show does what it's supposed to do. I find this frustrating at times, but it's probably perfect for other audiences. Some observations about Sam: (1) It would be nice if he'd express his own opinion more often. He's a little too "neutral" for my taste, but again, perhaps this is intentional in order to appeal to the target audience. (2) Also, and this is kind of deep, but I've noticed Sam seems kind of...sad? I'm not sure "sad" is the best word, but he doesn't seem to fully enjoy this job. When he makes comments about it being a long week, or him being excited to be off work, or something along those lines, it makes it seem like it was a chore to put together the show, and then I feel like this weird guilt for even listening. I get it, no one loves their job all the time, but I'd rather not feel that when listening to someone whose job it is to entertain.Read full review »

Sam Sanders might just be the black Terry Gross. He is moving NPR into a whole new realm of podcasting that seamlessly blends the news, personal anecdotes and opinion to generate a well rounded, innovative discussion that still feels like a Kiki with your favs!

Sam is such a great addition to my podcast feed! Miss him in the NPR Politics Podcast ( which is still great), so glad to see his new project finally out there in the world.
