Joe Paterno
Joseph Vincent Paterno (1926 - 2012) was the head football coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions for six decades. Nicknamed "JoePa," he set the record for the most victories by a major college football coach, coached more bowl game wins (24) than any other coach in college football history, and was the first Division I coach to reach 400 victories. Paterno coached five undefeated teams (1968, 1969, 1973, 1986, 1994) that won major bowl games. Legacy
This is what the man was about. Not 409 wins. Not two National Championships. Not the undefeated seasons. Those were milestones along the way. Joe Paterno, the English major from Brown, was about challenging young people to be great. It turns out he did that for many football players too.
