“When I was young (under 10), my mother, like every other white suburban boomer mom in the early 90’s, was deep in her King/Koontz/Crichton era. And me, being the curious child I was, would ask about the books she was reading, most especially the King books that had the interesting covers (in their plastic library dustjackets, of course). And so my dear mother would do her best to recount the plots of King books to small me, leaving out most of the less savory parts.
Now, of course I didn’t realize how and what she was carefully tossing out during her retellings, so imagine my surprise when, at age 13, I picked up Pet Sematary at her suggestion, and read…the loofah glove scene. While I continued to read King throughout my adolescence, there was always a part of me that missed the more chaste and less deeply weird director’s cut versions of my mother’s.
This is all to say, this podcast is a phenomenal trip down memory lane for me. And as a hobbyist writer, hearing King’s works broken down and discussed bit by bit, part by part, has been both helpful and just fascinating. I am so grateful for the work you do!
Do it for Steve!”
