STI ep
I was super keen to listen to this episode as someone who cares about people achieving their optimal health and as someone who has experienced the herpes stigma. In some ways I think they did try to address the stigma but in other ways perpetuated it. We need to be advocating for open honest relationships not some dark hole of the internet to send an anonymous text. I understand that this may be the most accessible/comfortable option for some people but also promoting strategies to help have an open conversation is key. STIs and especially herpes is a regular normal part of life, we shouldn’t need to hide them and promoting anonymity supports secrecy. Also, there was a time herpes negatively impacted my quality of life but with proper management, lifestyle changes (mainly diet and stress management), combating stigma and a lot of frank conversations, I am able to live a (what I believe) satisfying, happy life. I found the interview with doctor jarring as they seemed to only focus on the negative consequences; pain, low quality of life, depression etc, doing this elicits fear and shame. I agree we must normalise STIs and these experiences but we need to do so in a positive and open way! I will keep listening and hope we can continue along this journey learning from one another!
