But it wasn’t. The stupid dramatized cutaways absolutely killed the show. This is a hugely important part of American history, especially in light of current events like January 6, and they turned it into a joke.

So much fun. Mostly stuff I was at least marginally aware of. Like Mad magazine meets Howard Zinn. Nicely presented historical hilarity. Worth a listen!

This was such a great ride! Hilarious and informative -- delicious AND nutritious! Props to the whole team that made this, and that Joe Kinosian guy (music + 8000 characters) should get awards in all the categories!

Just tell the story. The voices are terrible.

I read General Butler’s book 20 years ago during the Iraq War. This book would be banned today because Fascist cannot handle the “truth”. I love this series. What a wonderful way to teach American History during the 1930s. I was reminded that the Fascists in this Country are still lingering...Read full review »

I heard someone say recently that history doesn’t repeat itself as much as it punishes those who fail to learn from it.

Very informative and I loved the funny voices.

Absolutely loved the approach taken on this podcast. I appreciate how facts were called out while also being clear about where any gaps in the story might be. I thought it was well balanced and a lot of fun to listen to. Unless we know our history we are doomed to repeat it!

Such a well done show! The voices made me laugh and actually helped me keep track of the many historical figures I’m learning about – smart method. And the main character’s arc, and the ending, is so genuinely moving; I definitely got misty-eyed. Honestly, I never knew about this part of U.S....Read full review »

This podcast was so enjoyable. I hope the crew behind it tells more tales. It’s legit history of a very perilous period in American history, told exquisitely with clever humor interjected for illustrative purposes. I miss it already.

A great satirical take on a story that sounds eerily familiar with todays doings!

Rarely has a story made me laugh and think quite as much as this one. It was such a gift. Thank you for all your hard work I’m bringing Major Smedley Butler’s story to life!

Great show! I’ve listened to the whole show twice already. Will probably listen one more time. The writing is fantastically clever and the voice performances are hilarious. Love it.

If there was more telling of history and trolling history along the way I bet I would have paid attention in school! Now I’m old and can’t do much with my opinions. Dang it this needed to be told ages ago like this! Bravo!

Dear Canadian writers/hosts (seriously, who hasn’t picked up on this by their wording, lack of basic knowledge on US military & gov’t cabinet roles, pronouncing Roosevelt as “Ruse-a-velt,” odd terminology, and only British “historians” interviewed about American history buried in Archives...Read full review »

I love this topic. Was excited to listen to a deep dive into the subject matter. The silly and annoying character voices made this unpleasant to listen to. Was hoping for a Dan Carlin style informative dive into a fascinating topic. Got hacky voice acting, if you wanna do a comedy podcast just do...Read full review »

This podcasts delves into an often forgotten chapter of American history where democracy dangled on the brink of destruction. A talentless, jejune, slapstick retelling of a real and very interesting historical event in US history that holds lessons for Americans today. Too bad.

Santayana said Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” Twain said”History doesn’t repeat itself but it often rhymes”.This is one of the best ways to enjoy those rhymes and hopefully never forget.

I was on a quest for a podcast with a solid historical narrative that was also entertaining. Although this series presses its luck with the way it works to weave in humor, the history is solid enough to keep me listening. Very well done. When I finish this series, I will likely return to Marc...Read full review »

The dumb acting and lame attempt at cartoonish humour ruined what would have otherwise been an interesting podcast. Couldn’t even get through the first episode.

The bold use of dramatization to teach a history lesson is my favorite thing about this show. Humanizing historical subjects as Let’s Start a Coup! does lends the listener perspective of the triumphs and tragic falls of history’s players.

Way over the top, somewhat offensive, and a real detriment to the history and research that seems to go into this work.

Love this, the voice characters are great! It has a real 30’s radio feel, keep up the great job.

Loving the dramatization, and the history period being addressed makes you really think about how things were at the time and how it could’ve turned out differently. Fantastic, and love the voices, keep up the great work guys!

We were skeptical of the cartoonish voice acting at first. But, after an episode or two, my husband and I find it hilarious.

Would have been better without the crappy comic “Voices”…..lame

A delightful, entertaining podcast that details a time in history that (I at least) know very little of. A lively learning experience featuring a wide range of characters portrayed by one very talented Joe Kinosian.

The info is good for this important subject, but the voice actors frame everything in bad jokes and making the protagonist, USMC Smedley Butler sound like a mincing fruit. In fact, ALL the voices are done with a "poofter" voice, which only detracts from the subject. A waste of time.Read full review »

I guess the hosts wanted to make history “fun” with the comic bits, but for me personally, it falls flat and even comes across as disrespectful to the plight of the people back then. The topic is fascinating but I’ll have to get the full story somewhere else.

Too much RKO. I’m an RKO fan but this is too much frilly drama theater. Was genuinely interested when I heard about the podcast but this is amateur hour radio theater.

Whom financed this effort the DNC or CCP, your attempt to take historical facts and twist them to skew contemporary events is not very veiled other than by sarcasm.

This show is delightful for the intelligent person. It really tells an untold story but requires you to think. Bravo.
