The distinguished attorney, educator and diplomat Max Kampelman was born in New York City, and earned his undergraduate degree at New York University in 1940. A conscientious objector in World War II, he volunteered for a starvation experiment at the University of Minnesota. Following this experience, he renounced pacifism and returned to New York University to earn his law degree.
