Comfort Show
I love this as a palette cleanser (no pun intended) for the more anxiety-inducing podcasts we all typically gobble up (no pun intended). Michele brings thoughtfulness to the conversation while she looks to invoke the spirit of kitchens from guests’ childhoods. The undercurrent of socioeconomic disparities in black kitchens takes the simple concept of food to highlight both survival and the life you can only get from family. Sometimes it is hard for me as a white person to hear small jabs like “oh this white person just didn’t get this.” Of course the complexity and hardship of black experience is not something I can empathize with, but there are generalizations made about some ubiquitous concepts and specific lovely experiences that I really DO understand. Hearing that I am excluded from those experiences in this conversation does make me feel alienated in a sphere where I otherwise find commonality and a real sense of connection. I would never want the podcast to flatten the experience of African American childhood for the sake of my privileged white feelings; I just like having a common thread to connect to people I really enjoy listening to.
