“Just finished your most recent episode, ‘Breathless’, and at the end made me think of my own personal story. Within a three-year period, I had been rushed to the hospital twice with what they now have diagnosed me with aseptic meningitis due to medicine I had taken for poison ivy that had Bactrim in it. I have never had any known allergies and at this point, I believe I was 29 years old and then again at 31.
Within minutes of taking the medicine, had major flu like symptoms; very high temperature, feeling freezing, vomiting. My brain was literally swelling from the meningitis and was causing so much pressure in my head. The pain was absolutely miserable and making me delirious. After being at the hospital for most of the week, I just started getting better, but the doctors had no clue what caused it or what made me get better.
Two years later, I took the same medicine, again having poison ivy (obviously not knowing what caused it the first time). Within about 15 minutes, I told my wife she needed to take me to the hospital. She was unsure why, but trusted my gut feeling. I hardly made it to the waiting room before I blacked out with an extremely high temperature again. basically went through the same process as last time, and eventually started getting better, and that is when the doctors connected the dots that it was the Bactrim/sulfa that I must be highly allergic to, and causes me to pretty much immediately have aseptic meningitis and almost killed me twice.”
