Not quite ambient, not quite drone… and certainly not boring.
I write software for a living, and I'm always on the lookout for music to accompany doing that. I primarily listen to house and techno mixes, with some ambient stuff thrown in when I want a change of pace. Very high BPMs (above 130) are a no-no as it's difficult to concentrate, and some vocals absolutely ruin my thinking. A lot of the ambient work I listen to, while very pretty, simply doesn't keep enough of my brain from wandering off, or has jarring cuts between pieces of music. The Music For Programming manages a superb balance between being unobtrusive but interesting, keeping parts of my mind occupied while allowing me to concentrate. If I had one criticism, it would be that some of the music is *so* lovely that I have to note it down. The track listings included on the site help greatly with this. Overall, utterly superb. I can't wait to hear more episodes, and maybe contribute one of my own some time.Read full review »

Scanning the set of 50 episodes is like time travel to early electronic artists (Tod Dockstader and Raymond Scott) all the way through to recent folks including the contributing track compilers. The crossfades are generally well engineered, to form complete compositions. Much kudos to Datassette...Read full review »
