Students demonstrate their Flexology design assignments, in which they create a set of signals and associated thematic material for conducted group improvisation.

This class begins with discussion of Miles Davis's "In a Silent Way," including its historical signficance and notes about the recording process. Then students demonstrate their modal melody design assignments, as inspired by the piece.

Guest artists Tim Ray (piano) and Greg Hopkins (trumpet) talk about their MIT concert from the previous week. Students learn one of Greg's compositions and then experiment with motivic, scale-based, and conversational improvisations.
