In our final episode of 2021 we round up our series on the 40th anniversary of the 1981 hunger strikes. Today we are joined by Bik McFarlane. Born in 1951 in North Belfast, Bik joined the blanket protests in 1981 and during the strikes became OC of the provisional prisoners. In 1983 Bik was part of the operation which saw 38 prisoners escape from Long Kesh.

He is one of the founding members of the James Connolly society which this year marks its 35th anniversary. Jims been involved in socialist republican and working class politics in Edinburgh, Scotland and Ireland for more than 30 years.

He was a founder of the civil rights movement in his home town of Derry and still plays an active role improving lives in his community today.
