Self-Validation
NPR's politics podcast is really an exercise in self-validation and pales compared to KCRW's Left, Right and Center. At it's core, it is a superficially diverse, intellectually homogenous group bleating what could literally be the party line. Worse, it's a chorus rather than a solo with no one speaker particuarly standing out and rewarding the listener for his/her time. Personally, I think some serious review should be going on behind the scenes, and I don't think the podcast should be continued in its current form. The NPR brand to me as a child promised something impartial- something fair and balanced. Sure the world is more nuanced now and NPR does tilt towards its liberal audience but on the whole it's one of the rare non-print publications that gets my trust. This podcast released under the NPR brand as its Politics podcast is shamelessly partisan. They couldn't even find the mildest figleaf of intellectual diversity by grabbing their Republican correspondent. One doesn't need to find a Fox news contributor to find a reasonable and legitimate critique of the radical left on campus (look no further than President Obama). Beyond functionally, limiting the podcast from producing an interesting "conversation", it seems like an NPR stamp of approval on a particular partisan view of reality. Politics connotes the broad spectrum rather than a particualar ideological Silo. It was hard deciding between a 2 and a 1. It isn't a bad podcast mechanically. Even if painfully monotone, it's not a meeting of the mountain. It is just boring. Terrible, terribly boring with a forgetable cast. If you want a distinctly liberal podcast, I would recommend Slate's gabfest. The all around cast here is superior to the two milquetoast men on Gabfest but Bazelon's verve makes up for it. Otherwise, there are several more diverse and narrow podcasts such as Left, Right and Center, The New Yorker's politics and Foreign Policy's editor's round table.Read full review »

Superficial - irritatingly devoid of insight.
