Missing 'It's All Politics'
Unlike NPR's equally unceremonious ouster of Bob Edwards a decade ago in a clumsy attempt to capture a younger audience for 'Morning Edition', the elimination of Ken Rudin and reduction of Ron Elving from 'Its All Politics' may succeed in alienating the installed base. Previously a smart, topical and informationally rich show, the latest incarnation forces 'the listener' to wade through so much cleverness, sarcasm and often tangential opinion that the podcast is now more reminiscent of a Top 40 'Early Morning Zoo' program than it is of the thoughtful, insightful, and well-informed journalism offered by the original hosts - an approach for which NPR is typically so highly regarded, and the reason millions of us listen to Public Radio instead of the FM drivel in the first place. Unfortunately, 'NPR Politics' doesn't meet this higher standard. In fact (and in a rather ironic twist), during a recent quiz given by one host to the others, only one participant answered all questions correctly: original host Ron Elving. In fact, he was the only participant to answer ANY of the questions posed, causing one of the new hosts to say, 'I better study up.' Indeed. That said, this new cast of characters is clearly smart, alert and articulate, so if NPR felt that this group would land a younger audience...or, frankly, whatever the reason for the change...achieving that goal should have been possible by talking another approach with this same crew. Instead, this new 'politics light' format is formulaic, talky, self-conscious and ultimately thin, all of which leave this listener wanting.Read full review »

I appreciate the youthful energy of this podcast compared with the more traditional npr shows. It's fun yet still very informative.Read full review »
