Offshore is a wonderful bridge between old and new, between where we want to be and where we find ourselves.

I loved the Maunakea season and grew up partially in Marshall Islands so that season hit my heart. Living on mainland most of my life with a dad from the lost generation, I’m so excited to hear this season about Hawaiian diaspora. Thank you for recognizing us who long for home but for so many...Read full review »

My Mom (from Nanakuli) joined the navy and settled in NC where she and my Dad (a Black man) raised my sisters and I. I felt and connected to this season because I question what it means to be Hawaiian when you’re not raised on the islands nor look Hawaiian. I now live in CA now, and have visited...Read full review »

I moved from Oahu to Idaho. I love listening to the civil beat crew and hearing very well articulated and interesting stories of my home.

A really interesting, thoughtful, empathetic and thorough podcast. I’ve learned a lot listening, and especially appreciate that the podcast provides a platform to elevate and spotlight the voices and interests of Hawaiians themselves.

I downloaded this podcast wanting to learn more about the complexity of crime and culture in Hawaii. If you are interested in a discussion such as that, go somewhere else. While the host states that she does not want to take sides on the issues and instead provide a platform for discussion, her...Read full review »

Just finished season 3 of Offshore and it might be my favorite one yet. Diving deep into cultural and political tensions and highlighting the lives and stories of Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders is something the Offshore team continues to do expertly. Thank you for your dedication to this...Read full review »

This podcast gives a great look into a side of Hawaii that most of us never get to see, and draws a lot of good attention to major contemporary issues in America such as racial justice and the rights of indigenous people. It's very thought provoking, and presents all sides in a fair and...Read full review »

Good stories and reporting, but difficult for me to listen to podcasts. After the first two, I found the trailing voice, elongating the last word of each sentence, to be extremely irritating, so stopped listening. Tried again but still the same. It is just me.

Please learn how to say HONOLULU... it is not Hanalulu, it is HONOLULU. Yes you are Malahini, but it is not okay to come here as a broadcaster and not bother to learn how to say Hawaiian words corrected.

Offshore gives its stories the depth they deserve. I love the long-form format and Jessica clearly cares about the subject she’s reporting on. The first two series gave a full perspective of the depth and richness of Hawai’ian culture and history. And The Blood Calls was equal parts informative...Read full review »

As an adoptive mom of an Arkansas born Marshallese little boy, I’m so appreciative of this podcast talking about the stories and ethics in Marshallese adoption. I just finished the first season. Well produced, well written and brilliant narration. Compelling, engaging and addictive. Addressing larger questions of race, class and community while following one criminal case.

The main story isn’t really the main story here. Stick with it and another underlying plot bleeds through. Above average production, good audio quality, deep reporting and a light-handed narrator make for a winner.

Whether you're living in Hawaii, traveled there, or are preparing to go for the first time, the Offshore podcast from Jessica Terrell and the people at PRX/Civil Beat/HPR/Etc. provides an excellent vehicle to getting into the nuance that is Hawaii. I appreciate how in the first season they really analyze the racial dynamics in Hawaii, and don't leave the "racist against white people!" whining unchallenged. Far less pretentious than some of the big name NPR investigative reporting shows which shall remain nameless.Read full review »

I don't know how I stumbled across this podcast but it has been a wonderful listen. As an American who has lived for years in the U.K. it was fantastic to hear about something completely outside my day-to-day life and provided wonderful insights into life in Hawaii.

This is the way stories need to be told, not in sound bites but in thoughtful long form narratives. There are always two sides and more information that we can know before we judge an event or person. Keep it up.

I'm halfway through and it's worth a listen. I appreciate Terell pointing out that whites react so exaggeratedly to being a minority in POC with cries of "racism!!!" Because they've never had to be an ethnic minority in their country.Read full review »

Great reporting on the historical and cultural context of a modern-day killing of a native Hawaiian man by a federal agent, which deftly wades into the complicated subjective of racial and cultural bias, as well as the complicated (and under-acknowledged) political history of Hawaii. I don't live in Hawaii - my sister did move there from the mainland and I have visited a few times.
