troubling micro aggression
I listened to the episode with Thich Nhat Hanh. The host Krista felt the need to say the listeners might have a hard time understanding him because he has a “vietnamese- french accent” and implies she couldn’t understand him. Meanwhile, he’s done many interviews and hundreds of talks to people across the world who understand him and nobody else has felt the need to say “you might not understand him” except krista. This is some deep and troubling whiteness- who does she think her audience is? does she think they are people who have never heard people speak with different accents? does she feel her not understanding him means others won’t or can she just sit with her lack of exposure is her issue, not ours? such micro aggression and it’s so tiring that this white host feels the need to explain a that world famous exile has an accent she can’t understand
