Too too sad
The thing about Bob is that he was a unique vocal personality — and for two decades we heard a slow, thoughtful, deliberated opinion rather than the all too common contemporary news broadcast — super fast paced, rarely gives anyone a chance for a rounded conversation and relies on experts rather than the educated opinion of the host. Listen to on point for example, now that Megna has the show. She says the word like more than an eighth grader and she never seems to have an opinion of her own. Terrible, and the show is on twice a day many cities and all they do is ask the same questions manically five times a week. Andnever give anyone a chance to thoughtfully or reflectively converse. Bob and Brooke certainly had their own opinions, that was made clear over the years. It might’ve been nice to bring in a third or fourth regular host, someone in their 20s or 30s or even 40s at this point, to keep the conversation multi generational in its awareness of the citizenry. But I never felt like Bob was an angry person on the air. Frustrated, yes. A bit fuddy-duddy, yes. Thinking too much about his placement in the world, yes. But so does Chris Lydon and he’s the least confrontational man on radio. If anything, I was occasionally bothered by the fact that Brooke — who I normally enjoy a great deal, an obviously intelligent and well spoken woman — was nonetheless often speaking with a very theatrical, sighing vocal presentation, and very privileged sounding for sure. You know, the people that are easily offended. On on the other hand, though he may have been privileged too, Bob sounded more like a standard boomer guy who, well educated in a Neo liberal tradition, had a serious problem with the ignorance of young people today. Did he have a bit of an attitude about it? Yes, sometimes. Was he the average conservative guy that poo-poos every new idea, absolutely not. Also — without a questioning, investigative tone — neither one of them would’ve gotten answers they did from their guests in the last two decades. Meaning, for all of the things some of us liked and didn’t like about their presentation at least it was a presentation and at least it had success. Of their presentations styles were obviously part of the success of the show and it’s entirety. As far as communicating solid ideas about current politics that made me want to tune in every single week, and look particularly forward to Friday’s when I had a new episode of on the media available, Brooke and Bob are both winners in my mind. But I think it’s really unfortunate that if one of them had to be cut, it was Bob. Just to too sad. Hopefully we won’t get someone with vocal fry who is 26 years old suddenly taking over his spot, speaking ineffectually without beautiful spaces between their words, and losing all reason to tune in each Friday at all. OK Brooke, you don’t have Bob anymore, if that is how it’s going to be please just don’t screw up his replacement! He is half the effin show after all.

Got hooked on this show last year when I was making long drives on the weekend. Always interesting and informative, I think it's one of the best radio shows out there these days.Read full review »

Always provides a rational perspective (so much the better if it annoys the extreme right) and insights into a broad range of issues, often on subjects that might otherwise be overlooked.
