Empathy and Action
I’ve always been aware of how people treat each other especially understanding a class system. But I could never put into words how I felt and what I was witnessing around me until I’ve listened to this book. At times I have to pause listening to the book and get up and do something else because I’m sick to my stomach from the acts of violence that occurred. I’ve witnessed the bias around me especially in the workplace and I decided years ago to be intentional in making a difference in our world. As I rose in a position I insured that I hired individuals based on their talent, promoted people based on their accomplishments and sought out diversity. Giving someone an opportunity in a position with an organization can change the outcome of not only their family but the outcome for others yet to come— instead of talking about it I made the effort to ensure I was surrounded by a diverse group of talented individuals that pushed me to excel. We need more people to have empathy and to actively be aware so they can create change in even the smallest way.
