We’ll be visiting one of the last “Ghost Wineries” in the valley, starting with it’s early days and bringin it up to current history.. and it’s rebirth. The term Ghost Winery, has little to do with ghosts, and is probably more closely related to the term ghost town.. some of which are said to be haunted… some are not. You can decide for yourself in this case.

It was the 119th anniversary of the Bostian Bridge accident, near Statesville, North Carolina. Nearly a dozen amateur ghost hunters gathered on the railroad tracks to see if they could hear history repeat itself. They had no idea they were about to add to the great tragedy’s history.

Two laborers drove their cart along a peaceful road in Monterey. It was a warm July evening and their only thoughts after a hard day’s work were getting home, having a little supper and hitting the sack. The men had made this trek many times over the past year and were feeling relaxed and safe traveling this particular route. They were somewhere between the La Virginia and La Carlota haciendas when they had their horrifying experience.

This is a strange tale that occurred about two years after the Great San Francisco Earthquake. In fact, it occurred on New Year’s Eve, 1909. Unlike most spooky tales, this one happened in broad daylight. The spirit or spirits involved were not the least bit shy either. I’ll be retelling this true story adapted from an article printed in the San Francisco Call on January 4, 1910.
