What an achievement
I’m trying to find words for what this is. The comedy roots don’t feel like red dwarf, if you binge listen to the series, rather than episode by episode (it works much better as a binge listen) the way the story arc and comedy layers are added is more like a very long episode of the IT crowd with (more than) a nod to more absurdist British comedy (I’m sure there’s a Python influence amongst many others). The build up to the end of series 2 and the finale demonstrates a deep understanding of how really good comedy works; the way new layers of absurdism build and build until you don’t think it can get any more absurd and it does. I was crying with laughter by the end and after I’d wiped the final tears away a while after it concluded I reflected on just what an achievement the writer and actors had accomplished. You should be incredibly proud of having created something so perfectly formed and executed within the constraints you work within. One of the reasons it works fo me is that despite it being so good, through the use of the wonderful narrator it remains firmly grounded and unpretentious. Since lock down I’ve turned off the radio and all news feeds and just listen to fiction podcasts to stay sane. There are many, many incredible audio fiction dramas being created across different genres, many by amateurs and people doing it in their spare time. I read reviews from time to time criticising the quality of voice acting and story progression on some of these amateur productions and think it’s a real shame. I want to thank each and every fiction podcast writer, sound designer, voice actor and those helping to finance their endeavours for having the passion, energy and dedication to bring your stories, your unique art, to us the listeners. Hats off to you all. And finally, I am from Scotland and yes, that is truly the worst Scottish accent I have ever heard. But that is the charm of Oz-9; it epitomises the ‘heart’ of the show, to have the part played by a Scottish actor would not work, wouldn’t feel true. I’m sure there are people from Minnesota who feel the same!

You can imagine my shock when I discovered that my local football team was the Albatross’s password, who’d have thought it, ’Mon the Ton’. Great show, including the strangled Scottish, sometime Northern Irish, sometime Minnesota accent. Keep up the good work.
