History of Ideas is great. More Runciman, less guests. Gerstle is not a good speaker. And Lea Ypi’s socialist desires get annoying quickly.

An excellent series, a real pleasure to hear a conversation that draws out the complexity, critique and contextual understanding of how freedom inheres in the world. Thank you both

Really enjoyed the President series. Made us rewatch The West Wing. Have upgraded to plus but market freedom show appeared before plus and however much I copy link, can’t get plus on my iPad. Fine on iPhone.

My recommended podcast of 2023-2024. Whether your interest lies in the past, present or future - David Runciman is truly gifted at taking complex ideas, theories and issues, and simultaneously simplifying them and weaving them into a tale that is both riveting and you desperately want to hear the...Read full review »

One of those frequent types who loves to hear their own voice & thinks the audience is flattered that they can listen. When Wikipedia is better, why waste time?

This is the rich and thoughtful graduate course I longed for back in the disappointing days and parade of ‘isms that constituted undergraduate philosophy…and history. Or perhaps it’s just that education is wasted on the young; much better revisited decades later. For this I thank David...Read full review »

Can I ask why the 2 presenters failed to mention the extroadinary Ted Kennedy speech at the 1980 Democratic convention only equalled 4 years later by Mario Cuomo Marc Bernstein of Southgate North London

An absolutely incredible amount of information that is just not taught as part of civic education. I’ve been a longtime listener but this series takes the show to a new level and is especially important context for this year’s election.

Very sad because History of Ideas is great when Runciman just talks someone else’s ideas. Ypi, Gerstle and Runciman’s other ivory tower friends are not as interesting as they think they are

I have listened to all these and despite being perhaps the thickest listener I get a lot from these . In an ocean of podcasts these stand out . Always interesting .I can’t wait for all the new episodes coming soon.

Well that was depressing. Sorry, I thought it was excellent and thought provoking but on a wet Thursday morning I should perhaps have listened to something ‘frothy’.

This is an incredible podcast. I wish I’d had the Mary Stuart one when studying Schiller’s Maria Stuart at A level

Excellent presenter who makes the ideas accessible without dumbing down. When talking about democracy and joined by Lea Ypi the future looks like a place you’d want to live. Listen to the History of Ideas series. I wish everyone could.

This show is amazing and David is excellent in it. The themes, the chats and the lucid elucidation ;). This really should be mandatory listening in advanced history courses!

If you are interested in ideas, political, social or cultural, this is the podcast for you. The hosts are thoughtful, humble and not dogmatic. This is how discourse should be done.

Excellent dialogue with thoughtful, in-depth discussions. I have heard several interviews with Rory about his book. They seem so superficial compared to this one.

A friend recommended your podcast on “A Room of One’s Own”. I listened to it this morning and wow, what a great summary/analysis! I am trying to find a transcript of it because you made some great points that I want to make notes on.

My 23-year-old son put me onto this podcast, specifically, the history of ideas episodes, and I am obsessed. It’s not hyperbole to say that these episodes have opened my mind to a world. I was only vaguely aware of. I am so impressed with David Runcimon, the quality of the content and the...Read full review »

Imagine the smartest conversation you’ve ever had, multiply the brilliance and thoughtfulness times 10, add a dash of intellectual humility, and you have this podcast. A refuge from the awful politics of now—but a historical one, that shows you where those politics came from and where they might...Read full review »

This podcast is so good, I can’t stop recommending it to people. Engages with ideas with a level of sophistication that I haven’t found with any other podcast, while remaining accessible and entertaining. At its best, this podcast will open your eyes to truths you’d never focused on before. The host and his guests wrestle with the biggest crises of our time in attempts to understand where we are, what is right, and what can be done. Absolutely brilliant. Rather dull to attempt to necklace an ethnicity with what is a univeral. Such reviews are the product of an other's envy, or that of a duped member of that group that the other scorns.Read full review »

Dear David, While I’m sympathetic to your conclusion, the path you take to it is a crafty pastiche of Eurocentric chauvinism at best. It would be more accurate to label this global mess we find ourselves in the Anglocene. Britain created the Leviathan and exported it around our planet. Human...Read full review »

Thank you so much for this series. I think the Orwell is the best, but the Didion and Baldwin are up there. The episode on Orwell’s essay, “The Lion and the Unicorn,” is a tour de force. This one easygoing talk has the dimensions of a whole book about British history and culture.
