Are things better?
Interesting to hear a positive podcast from a member of the dismal science (joke). I think this is a classic example of two seemingly opposite thoughts being true. We struggle with this (see Congress). Mankind still suffers from the conditions described in the OT (family members killing each other (Discover ID channel) and countries racked by genocide) and some measures of human flourishing are trending up. I watched an interesting program on PBS about a man who wanted to revolutionize agriculture to feed the growing population. The detractors said he had succeeded, but the methods did more harm than good (fertilizer). In a Freakanomics podcast, the question of moving past GDP to a more wholistic measurement of economic success should be used. The answer is yes (IMO). Popular data points such as GDP and DOW cannot measure the overall health of an economy. The advice to pick your controversies carefully was spot on in our current rage and cancel culture. The constant need to be angry does cause one not to see the good that does happen in the world.
