Joe McMenamin is a physician attorney. He obtained his medical degree and his doctorate of jurisprudence at the University of Pennsylvania. He has spent most of his professional life practicing medical and healthcare law. He has been a digital health advisor, AI advisor, and speaker on these and other topics. He is also one of the 12 speakers at the live 2024 Nonclinical Career Summit to be held in April.
During today’s interview, Dr. McMenamin provides his thoughts on the topic of work as a medical expert witness. He begins by explaining why he decided to pursue a law degree and career after completing his residency. Then he explains the different types of expert witnesses, and where the medical expert witness fits into the legal system, based on years of experience engaging his own expert witnesses and cross-examining opposing experts.
He also describes what is expected of physician expert witnesses and his advice on pursuing such a role as a consulting and/or testifying expert. We close our conversation with Joe’s advice for practicing physicians who may be considering the pursuit of a law degree.
