“It's the eve of total lockdown in Auckland. The covid-19 pandemic of 2020 is in full swing. I'm preparing to stay in my room for nearly a month straight. I can see the liquor store across the street inundated with alcoholics panic buying beer wine and other booze. Anxiety is at an all time high.
To calm myself down I turn on one of my favorite podcasts, plat chat. I'm enjoying hearing about new heroes and pepega observing, but then the crew takes a dark turn.
They start discussing geography, a thing that these four people are not qualified in any way shape or form to discuss. Then the fateful question.
"What's the capital of New Zealand"
We're talking about the center of our government. The place where just a mere few days ago, our fearless leader and prime minister announced the lengths our country will have to go to to keep us all safe. It's a hard sacrifice but as a country we follow her bravely into battle against the onslaught of the coronavirus. That is what Wellington means to us.
The response? "Who gives a shit about New Zealand"
I was shocked. Appalled. In this, our time of greatest need, our time where we as a country have come together in shared sacrifice, this, the slanderous tounge of one Joshua Wilkinson, has struck a deafening blow against our national pride.
We have as a country survived earthquakes. World wars. Devastating terrorist attacks. We will persist. We will get through. But you, this "sideshow" character, have gone a step too far.
