Deep, Insightful Interviews about games and their reviews
Quality Control is way beyond a simple game review podcast - it’s a deep dive into the games, their social context, the industry context, and the logic behind gaming criticism. Because Justin interviews different guests each episode and allows these critics to directly address reader questions, each episode is different in tone and substance. Justin stays relatively impartial as a host, wanting to learn from the interview rather than push any thoughts of his own, but he is consistently entertaining and insightful. However, I have one comment that I hope Polygon takes to heart - Besties was a great podcast because of its often positive celebration of games and I loved listening to the panel enthusiastically endorse and embrace games. It would be nice to have a special monthly Quality Control episode that brings on a panel or guest to discuss, not only the month’s highlights, but also a special topic in gaming (maybe something like Filmspotting’s Top 5’s or marathon reviews). Not because I want Besties back, but rather because I want to see Quality Control at its full power and potential. Polygon is the first website/publication to actually treat games as art - media that can be evaluated and criticized beyond “(blank) out of 10" or “Buy It or Don’t Buy It” or “Woah, sweet graphics and new features." This podcast is a wonderful extension of the site and I hope it keeps going. It’s bringing to video game criticism what André Bazin, Pauline Kael, Roger Ebert, and Andrew Sarris brought to film criticism - serious insight and profound love for the medium.Read full review »

Gives you extra insight on games from the people who review them. It's even sparked interest in me for games I wouldn't otherwise consider.Read full review »

Having a dedicated podcast for discussing reviews is an interesting concept. With online game criticism moving towards shorter content as a result of less reading from home, the length and detail of some reviews has suffered. Haven’t found this to be an issue as of yet with Polygon’s reviews, but...Read full review »
