Not exactly "Potterless"
If you listen to the episode where he breaks down everything he knows about HP, you realize he already knows most of the big plot points and twists. This is really disappointing because it waters down the whole premise of the show. A prime example is in book 7 during the chapter "The Prince's Tale" there's a big reveal. This is one of the highest impact chapters for 99% of Potterheads. It's when everything finally clicks into place. But it barely has any impact on Mike, because even though it's the final reveal in the series, he knew about it from day 1. He even mocks the term "Always" leading up to it because he is biased by hindsight. Mike's reading is tainted by his knowledge of all the spoilers. Unfortunately, he will never really be able to relate to the experience of true unspoiled first time readers. If you don't mind the fact that he isn't really "Potterless" and can deal with some mocking of the text then you will enjoy it. He's funny and it's good production. However, I know it's hard for a lot of us Potterheads to listen to misunderstandings or criticism (sometimes unjustly) of the series. It can be pretty negative in the beginning but it does improve with time. I got through all the book episodes, and it's entertaining. But if you're wondering, no — I don't feel like it ever genuinely "clicked" with the host compared to those of us who grew up with the series.Read full review »
