Listen now
Description
Welcome to Session 3 of the #ParentingPower Season of Power Your Life Today! In this episode, my parents and I explore more specifics about discipline around Grounding, Timeout, Curfew, Technology, and Spanking: Questions we explored: Will you tell us about the timeout chair, what its purpose was, and some of the rules/regulations around it? Why the timeout chair is more effective than "go to your room." At what age the timeout chair was not a discipline option any longer. Younger parents are dealing with social media, phones, and advancing technology. What are some of the difficulties parents may have around technology? Why didn't you buy any of your kids (except the oldest) a car? How being the "nice parent" is doing a disservice to the child. How Dad manages technology and cell phones in his high school classroom. How to manage cell phones at dinner The Yellow Chart for curfew, time spent, and other guidelines The spoon--when and how it is used for spanking I learned the timeout chair is amazing for having one-on-one time with the child when you're handling it well. At other times the timeout chair is great for giving you time and space to get your act together. I also learned that Mom never set a timer for how long we had to be on the timeout chair. "When you're ready to talk, let me know and I'll come talk with you." The child decides how long they're on there, and after their recognition that they were out of control and need to calm down. It's not a punishment, simply timeout. It was also interesting to note how the timeout chair correlated to the way all of us kids, now as adults,  Mom also identified that when families don't talk, you hold it in, and eventually explode in anger. Talking and identifying feelings is a critical part of emotional development. Favorite quote from Mom: "It's about helping the child understand themselves." Favorite quote from Dad: When kids say "everyone else gets to do it." Dad said, "Name ten." Learn more about the LDS faith here: www.lds.org
