Excellent alternative to trying to read Meditations
I found this podcast in a round about way. I'm not sure exactly what set me off on my recent search to read up on Stoicism, but I think I've heard through varous other means ideas like "separate what you can control from what you can't, and focus on that", and "you cannot predict the future, so focus on what you can do right now". These ideas aren't unque to Stoicism, they show up in a lot of business/software books on process and commuications for example, but they are also part of Stoicism. So I thought "Right. Where do I begin?". After a few weeks of stumbling around through other podcasts that were good in a way, but just random bites of Stoic advice, I wanted to understand one of the works, such as Meditations, because most of these podcasts were random samplings of this. I read a few passages of the Project Gutenburg freely available version but was soon lost, much like when I was obliged to read Shakespeare in high school. I remember back then there were books that would have modern English translations, explanations and additonal detail in facing pages to the text, and that's what really made the works accessable to most readers. Finally, I'll get to the point. This podcast is just like one of those books. Tanner reads a meditation (i.e. idea or passage) an episode, word-for-word from a translation (sometimes he'll source the best translation), and then explains it in his own words plus adds to it his own thoughts and experiences. Over the last few weeks I've been binge-listening my way through the first two books of Meditiations on my morning walks, and look forward to it each morning now. If you've been wondering where to start with Stoicism, forget channel hopping other podcasts or trying to decide which book to read first. Start right here! Thank you for creating such a wonderful resource, Tanner!Read full review »

Seems to be the Stoic discussion I’ve been looking for. Others I’ve tried are academic, intangible lectures. This one is…practical. I am a Stoic work in progress. This helps me stay in the path.

Practical Stoicism is a really healthy community. Not only does Tanner provide an easily comprehensible and applicable explanation of Stoicism, he cares a lot about the audience as individuals, which is evident in all of his openings and greetings. He's honest, humble, down-to-earth, and...Read full review »
