And he took his work seriously, signing up for multiple long stints at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station, run by the National Science Foundation. A job assignment like this one was not for the faint of heart as it required working more than half a year in darkness and in an environment of such extreme temperatures that even a plane couldn’t land because its fuel would freeze. It also meant months of complete isolation from the outside world; so, when Rodney Marks fell ill, there were limited resources. When he died on May 12, 2000, it would be over five months before his body could be removed from the Antarctic continent and an autopsy performed. A full seven months after Marks passed away, autopsy results revealed the biggest shock of all—he had been poisoned.
