“Been listening to this show for almost 10 years and always loved it to death. Recently the show has become a constant and unbearable virtue signalling rant. While all the points brought up by Ed and the rest of the team regarding possible Qatari ownership, “financial doping”, and Qatar hosting the world cup are valid and important to talk about, it’s difficult to hear the same points repeated literally every podcast. Moreover, the way these issues are talked about is often in a way that screams a euro-supremacist worldview and lacks any consideration of alternative points of view. A few episodes when one of the guests pushed Ed on why Qatari ownership is worse than a Ratcliffe ownership, Ed really struggled to come up with a coherent answer. Perhaps the answer is just that the British people and government can’t stand the idea of arab states medelling in their affairs. I mean cry me a river. Ed’s refrain of “I would criticize the UK government if they tried buying a club” really misses the point that every day the UK is benefiting from the EPL’s soft power. This is not to use a whataboutery kind of argument, but it feels hypocritical that every episode arab state ownership is criticized, but not the UK government and the years and years of oppression and colonialism that allowed the UK to export a cultural product like the EPL. I wish all the ills in the EPL are criticized equally and in a volume that results in a bearable listening product. The football cant be divorced from the political context, but the football isn’t ALL about the political context, and it’s certainly not only about SOME of the political context.
I know the response is gonna be some snarky comment in the pod about how I asked Ed to shut up and dribble, but again that would be missing the point.
Genuinely wishing you all the best and hope you take this criticism with an open heart and mind! You have provided me great company on many walks and commutes and I’ll always be grateful for that.”
