Cormac McCarthy was misunderstood in his time; the tradition continues
Cormac McCarthy's novel, as they were released in his time, got uniform nergative to underappreciated reviews. Here we have a loving podcast devoted to his "hits" (Blood Meridian, Suttree, All the Pretty Horses), yet we had TWO novel published within the year and the host and his panel of academic experts not only have ignored them, but dismiss them. Listen to the latest podcast in memorium to the great author: these "experts" take more time slagging his latest works than taking the time to break them down and comprehend them. I'm no fan of "The Counselor," but to hear the host and his guests dismiss the work, in the face of citing Guillermo del Toro's praise of the film (in which del Toro cites middle class Americans who do not live in a world of crime would not understand what the film was going for), tells me all about the quality of character these "experts" have. No effort is made to comprehend "The Counselor," let alone two major works by Cormac McCarthy, THE PASSENGER and STELLA MARIS. What on earth are experts for? What is this podcast for? To praise his greatest hits, which (surprise surprise) were ignored his the author's own time. The host and academics continue this awful tradition. The literary world SCREAMS for analysis of the author's last works. While far from perfect, the books do not deserve to be uniformly ignored, as this podcast actively does. It boils my teeth. What good is a podcast about a great American author, where hours are spent on breakdowns and fascinating insight, only to have it turn its back of the author in his own life time?Read full review »

More reviews of Reading McCarthy
After finally finishing BM I went looking for what the hell it was all about … I found this podcast & I love the accessible nature of a largely academic analysis of CM’s work … thank you. I love it

Expert readers who can thread the plot lines and characters in McCarthy’s great works through the great movements of the past century. I really enjoyed this.
