Cautionary Romanticism of life on the road
After Ronna & Beverly, this is my favorite podcast. Although not all of the comedians are interested/interesting, Murray has the insiders' ability to draw them out and get them to delve. There's at least one keeper story in each episode--Bert K showing his penis to an audience member back stage/on mike is a particularly good one. But what I love about the podcast isn't the wild stories (Allan Stephan rests in the nostalgia of his a litle too comfortably, reminding me of my dad's saying on nostalgia: You're not the man you never were). Touring as a comedian is such a specifically taxing way to live; it seems more like a calling than a choice, but when the comics relate the details about sleeping in their cars before a gig, the consequences of stealing a french fry from the headliners' plate, the petty agendas of club owners and local middlers, etc., it both dampens and illuminates the romantic idea of what it is like to make a living on the road. I guess I'd call it cautionary romanticism--poignant and funny at the same time, without trying to be either.Read full review »
