A decent podcast with interesting ideas
By in large there are two types of History podcasts available on I-tunes, the unstructured talking about history kind (The Napolean Bonaparte podcast, for example) and the history as a story lecture style (The History of Rome, anything by Lars Brownworth). This is the only podcast in the latter catergory covering Russian history on I-Tunes that I'm aware of, so it gets pretty high marks for being unique. The concept of a "Slapshot" episode, a lagniappe of information on a topic unrelated to the flow of the overall story but crucial to understanding the events shaping the story, is likewise an innovation that I wish would be be adopted by more podcasts within the genre, so again, high marks for innovation. Where the podcast suffers in in its presentation. Often it feels as if the presenter is attempting to get the entire podcast done in one take. Editing seems almost nonexistant and it sometimes feels as if the presentation could only be improved by more tightly scripting the narrative in advance, so I can't rate it as perfect. Nonetheless podcasting is by in large a hobby and not professional broadcasting, so these stylistic concerns should in no way interfere with a history buff's enjoyment of a fascinating story.Read full review »
