John and Andy remind me of the best professors I had in college. They are thoroughly prepared, open minded, insightful and enthusiastic. Or to put more simply, these guys make history fun!!!!!

Having caught up on the whole of Rex Factor in two weeks I followed up one of their recommendations & here I am! This is going to take me longer because I have no pre knowledge about Icelandic Sagas but I’m having a great time learning in a fun way. Well done Andy & John from Carol in...Read full review »

I listened to this podcast while traveling around Iceland and Norway and reading the Sagas. These two made the sagas fun and relatable! Friends kept looking at me when I would randomly giggle. IT’S A SAGA THING!!!! Thanks guys!

I only recently started listing in prep for my up coming trip to Iceland. It is so well done, these guys are clever and very entertaining. I am addicted!

Probably my favorite podcast. These two really bring out the fun in the sagas and present it in an accessible way, with lots of scholarly digressions (and a few less than scholarly but highly entertaining). Highly recommended.

Educational, with a lot of great info on the sagas, but also really fun.

There was a lot of good information and scholarship in the episode I listened to, but I was distracted by the informality of the presentation--lots of giggling & wisecracks, & participants talking over each other. I probably will not return to this podcast.

Granted this is pretty much the only podcast about the sagas, but what a benchmark to set. Extremely informative - even to an icelander that grew up reading the sagas - excaptionally well presented and, most surprisingly, absolutely hillarious.

As someone with a degree in history I am always looking for new periods to explore. Honestly, I never thought twice about Icelandic lore and legends but found Saga Thing and am now hooked. The podcast itself is so much fun, though they need to stop fighting their urges to introduce “Princess...Read full review »

My amma bought my family the complete translated collection of the Icelandic sögur when I was a kid, but none of us ever really touched them until I found this podcast! I’ve also played some of the episodes for my mom, and she really enjoys the show too!

And it's all these guys' fault! But seriously, who could resist the Icelandic Sagas? I describe them to my friends as a cold Wild West with no guns but more lawyers. Thank you two for introducing me to these texts, providing interesting analysis, and giving me plenty of laughs.Read full review »

Wow, I had some idea that old Scandinavian sagas were crazy before listening to this podcast, but after 3 episodes I’ve come to know that I didn’t know the half of it. So far the sagas have included a guy repeatedly thwacking a ghost seal back into its hole in the floor, another guy holding his...Read full review »

I’ve been listening to Saga Thing for several months, now. Instead of listening to current episodes, I’m making my way slowly but surely through the back catalogue of episodes, all the way back to the beginning! I just finished the VERY lengthy yet EXTREMELY entertaining romp through Njal’s Saga...Read full review »

I expected blood feuds and viking raids, epic voyages and alliterative poetry. And I got all that. I wasn’t expecting all the lawsuits. And I certainly wasn’t expecting the minutiae of legal technicalities to frequently be some of most fascinating and dramatic parts of some of the sagas. I can’t...Read full review »

Two scholars discussing the Icelandic sagas. May sounds boring, but is anything but! I am making my way through the back catalogue. I hope by the time I catch up Andy will have finished rhe saga brief on the legal system he promised in Njal’s saga. I really enjoy the academic banter with a competitive edge.

I highly recommend this podcast.
