“For aspiring or even novice screenwriters, there is no better podcast than Scriptnotes. John August and Craig Mazin actually take the time to PREPARE for each podcast, and the effect is noticeable, unlike many "off the cuff" podcasts that ramble on too long about nothing.
After a few listens, you'll find yourself looking forward to the "back-and-forth" more so than the advice. John's attempts at pussyfooting around a bad script sample are often met with Craig's leadfooted honesty. Humor ensues. In reverse, Craig's bull-in-a-china-shop opinions sometimes require a gentle smoothing over by a certain Mr. August. In all, it's two successful screenwriters talking about their craft, and the conversations are what you'd expect from two people paid to make characters interesting for a living. For those of you pining away for an audio version of The Odd Couple (I know you're out there somewhere), you'll find your Oscar and Felix right here; just don't tell Craig he's Oscar - it will only make him angry.
As for screenwriting advice, I found the most valuable podcasts to be the ones where John and Craig analyze writing samples from the listeners because they don't only critique the writing but offer specific suggestions to make it better.
