“Great China podcast, even handed and insightful, keeps this laowai in the loop even after I returned to the US.
Writing today because I can’t stand the venture capital guy who keeps interrupting everyone in the newest episode! He lost me as soon as he started saying that Baidu actually wanted the government off its back and got no help from any industrial policy. I have no problem with industrial policy per se, but it’s just stupid to claim that Baidu would exist in its current form without the government conveniently blocking domestic access to any of its competitors. There’s no “national security” justification for blocking Google Maps, but there sure is a commercial one (and Baidu cashed in big time).
Tell that guy to let the guest, who is actually interesting, speak!”
