So human in the ways these individuals tell our collective story. You never once got in the way of anybody. Dignity on Display! Your spoon full of raw unrefined sugar helps the bitter medicine of truth go down. Appreciate each and ever person in the podcast.

Top quality journalism and production as I would expect from any CBC podcast. I’m sure the story is more nuanced and that this person is a slum lord but there isn’t really any effort to address the fact that poor people need a place to live… even if it’s an ugly house in a middle class...Read full review »

Great report about Edmonton’s most notorious slum landlord. But, I feel that there is so, so much more to this story. He was the owner of Dwayne’s Home, which was funded in part by the city to “solve” homelessness, in turn he sold drugs after NA meetings, charged individuals on AISH their entire...Read full review »

Listening to this in May 2022 when we are seeing the issues escalated and a new city council trying to deal with the issues, it is madder to see the previous elected officials and city managers etc did nothing at all to deal with the issues. This is an issue that seems to be spreading to other...Read full review »

Very interesting, especially when you live in North Edmonton! But… please, change the music and shorten it up a bit!! I absolutely can’t not fast forward through it!!😝

I’ve come back to this podcast multiple times. It so well produced and offers multiple perspectives and backgrounds. A few new episodes as an epilogue, chronicling Shah’s last year (attempts on his life) and death would be a great addition.
CJBeats64 via Apple Podcasts · Canada · 03/26/22
With shahs recent death it would be a good time for an update!

Unbelievably unethical and incomplete journalism for CBC. They talk about homeless drug users for the whole podcast but don’t talk TO homeless drug users, and craft a narrative where this particular landlord is the issue (he’s awful) but not that challenges the NIMBYism that defines this whole...Read full review »

Very interesting podcast! It’s a shame there weren’t any follow-up episodes updating on later developments as a friend of mine had to fill me in on some juicy details and developments that came out later and would’ve added a lot more colour to the series.

Really enjoyed it, thank you. Well researched land also that it had interviews, that’s what I like. Well done 👏

My Dad & Uncles grew up there, and this is a tragic change to this old sweet neighborhood with Italian Nonas making lasagne. I spent many safe summers and Christmases wandering this neighborhood as a child.

Wanted to love this, but thought it was just “ok”. Well researched but not captivating enough for me. Sorry.

Great listen! I could’ve sworn that this podcast was describing my old neighbourhood on Saskatoon’s west side in the area known as alphabet city. There’s a problem landlord that has been able to get away with being a slum lord for years! There’s a few but one fellow is worse than them all. I...Read full review »

blarg. too many NIMBYs and not enough knowledge about poverty, trauma, drug use, addiction. Didn’t even bother to talk to the folks they’re talking about. For a real podcast about these issues check out Crackdown.

Good podcast, a little repetitive with the facts especially with such short episodes. Ps: Edmonton isn’t a slumtown - but this is definitely an important issue and I’m glad it’s getting more attention.

First-class journalism here. A very, very detailed investigative podcast that goes inside shell companies, tenants, neighbors, and slum lords in inner city Canada. There’s a nice balance between having sympathy for the people getting screwed by the system, while also calling out the gang and drug...Read full review »

I'm only on episode 3, but this is already one of the best true crime podcasts I've heard. Fascinating and very well reported without all of the host back patting that I've come to loathe. Keep it up!!!Read full review »

CBC should be ashamed of the mastering on this series. A few minutes In audacity could volume level this, why couldn't they?Read full review »

Maybe it’s just because it’s my neighbourhood being discussed but this is absolutely illuminating. Ms. Hames does an excellent job investigating everything that occurs under the surface in our fair city. If you’re an engaged Edmontonian, you owe it to yourself to listen to this.

The story itself is great however, some facts are repeated often and the volume is inconsistent, rising and falling constantly.

I grew up just outside of Edmonton so I was interested when I saw this podcast. The sound quality is terrible. The story is incomplete and repeated in every episode. There isn’t enough information for this to have been worthwhile

This was a very interesting story. It is very sad that the residents of this neighbourhood have to tolerate the derelict properties and the criminal element that goes along with them. What is sadder is that the City and mayor haven’t responded and don’t even want to talk to the reporter. I’m sure...Read full review »

I have finished listening to the 5 episodes of Elizabeth Hames’ podcast investigative series, "Slumtown." It was fascinating and nicely paced with an excellent presentation of a very complex puzzle! Host Elizabeth Hames has a great narrative style. And the investigative work is noteworthy. However, it feels a little rough. Like a second or third cut rather than the final mix. Still, at its core, it’s a story about people, and what happens when one house goes to sh**. Gave me some ideas for...Read full review »

The quality of production makes it really hard to listen to. I love listening to podcasts during my morning commute on transit but I had to constantly readjust the volume because I either couldn’t hear because it was soft and fuzzy or had my eardrums blown out by the sudden change in volume. When you strip it down there’s not a lot of substance here, lots of repetition. It’s a lot of things that people here in the city are already very aware of. Also the sound is really spotty in a few places, goes from whisper quiet to yelling loud in a couple places.
