On balance… here’s my take
When you introduce paid for content it does somewhat open you up to scrutiny. For me, there was an old fashioned anti-establishment vibe to the old BBC content, where we as listeners were on-side, occasionally railing against the good old beeb and all its controls. With paid for content, our beloved duo have ostensibly become ‘the establishment’. The way the Take 1 and Take 2 content has been divided has changed the feel and coherence of the show. If you look at other podcasts that offer free and then additional paid for content (Empire) there’s clear demarcation between the two. You want a spoiler special? You pay for it and you get it in spades. What you don’t get is (and I’m sorry to say) clumsily split interviews, and general content that feels like it belongs to Take 1. Each ‘take’ should feel fully formed in its own right. Will I continue listening? Yes. Will I continue to subscribe to the extra Takes. I’m afraid not.
