MTL and proud Vanguardista here. Love the show Steve and I think it gets better and better. Always gets my Friday off to a great start. For the critics, a contrary opinion: Mark has always been left wing; listeners emails’ have been a (wonderful, and often emotional) part of the show for a...Read full review »

LtL, Vanguardista, been listening since I was a young man, I’m now an old man. One of the very few podcasts I actually spend money on.

Best film podcast around, bar none. Have been a listener since I was 13 back on BBC, and I’m now 25 - does that make me an LTL or a MTL ? Either way, these two make me smile every week when I have the pleasure of listening in on their wittering and musings on films, tv, and current affairs !...Read full review »

I would never miss a show on the BBC from when it first became a podcast. Sadly I only sporadically listen to this reincarnation that somehow seems to have had the soul ripped out of it. I have faith in you though. Please consider changing this subscription model for starters and please no...Read full review »

What are the negative reviewers listening to? They’re either written by Artificial Intelligence or Low Intelligence! These guys are always a great listen. Just don’t listen if you don’t like, bog off with your pointless reviews…

Not enough movie chat these days for me. The reviews seem more of an afterthought now. Shame…
N.army via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 09/28/23
This podcast has turned into two people who love the sound of their own voice, discussing banal subjects with loose references to old directors. Really poor.

I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed. Everything get's worse then it leaves the BBC cf. Great British Bake Off, Jeremy Clarkson (Top Gear / The Grand Tour), ... The free version is full of dreadfull ads and boring fillers (Laughter Lift, etc.). I really liked the banter, but now the...Read full review »

I am always interested and looking for new podcasts but was surprised to see and listen to a totally different type of podcast sold using the brand kermode and mayo. Kathy Burke is a great actor and has very strong name recognition in her own right. If I want to listen to Kathy I will but...Read full review »

Please stop the stand ins I’d rather pay my subscription and have silence than have witterless subs, I simply delete when the boys are not in town

This is my favourite podcast to listen to whether it’s Mark and Simon or the super subs over the summer including Rhiannon, Anna, Robbie and James. It’s nice to hear from the subs for a different perspective on things and I think they all bring great energy to the show. Keep up the good work...Read full review »

Not sure what to make of this anymore. Sorry to be another of the ‘I used to love this podcast when it was on the BBC’ brigade but it just seems to have lost something. Rarely listen to a whole episode now and agree with what others have said re quality of the stand-ins - I don’t listen at all if...Read full review »

Still enjoyable stuff if ever so slightly lacking the magic of the original incarnation. I find many of the interviews a bit pointless and fawning and would happily substitute them for Kermode ‘s views on film related stuff. I particularly enjoy it when there are two reviewers on the show( sorry...Read full review »

Since this podcast actually started. The average review has been 3 Stars. Sounds about right. Average tripe. The sycophantic reviews prior to broadcast should be removed.

I signed up for a Mark Kermode podcast, instead I get some giggling girlies. Such a ripoff.

I used to love these pair, they were like a pair of comfortable old slippers, but near the end of the BBC run (which I was forced to pay for) Kermode’s political leanings were slipped into the show more and more, which was the start of the decline. Now on the new platform (which I’m not forced to...Read full review »

I have listened to Kermode and Mayo for more than a decade, probably closing in on two decades, but I have to express my disappointment about finding out you only ship your merch to the USA and Australia. Still world class. Just please fix some of the bugs, it’s the only podcast I listen to where the sound cuts out half way in and I have to close the app and restart it

The level of spite in some of these 1 star reviews is absolutely hilarious. Simon Mayo also does a non-BBC affiliated book review podcast, if you want to try and sink that as well fellas. Anyway, I don’t pay for this, I just get the free show…I enjoy listening to it, it’s free, so 5 stars from me.

I loved the BBC show. It evolved organically over time. Now they’ve tried to bottle the lightning ( and put it into several bottles, only one of which is subscription free) and it has lost the magic. The reviews are still good, but it all feels artificial and forced. The adverts are irritating...Read full review »

Popped back in to see if things have improved after a couple of months. Sadly they have not. Total Film is providing a good replacement for the substantive film discussion and reviews, but I still miss the old wittering. Kermode’s reviews are entertaining but that’s about it. Mayo’s interviews are too sycophantic and the listeners’ emails are full of the sort of smugness, pedantry and virtue signalling that makes me run for the hills. I’d recommend that you skip the podcast and just listen to the reviews on YouTube.

Why can I only see the “extra” take episodes in my apple podcast list? The Take 1 episodes are nowhere to be seen. Admittedly, I’m a few months behind but that shouldn’t make a diffemce. Even selecting “All Episodes” doesn’t show then.
ytpaxton via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 07/11/23
When talking films, it’s good but more and more it seems to be the two men moaning about politics and suggesting anyone who thinks slightly differently to them is an idiot of evil. Lose the politics chat, we have enough of it everywhere don’t need it here.
Sankle Tank via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 07/07/23
Take one gets shorter and shorter and there have been so many occasions where it hasn’t been put up on time and even times where it’s been mistakenly put behind a paywall and only then made available days later. Take ‘one’ isn’t the priority anymore as it doesn’t make them the money that they...Read full review »

I love being a ‘vanguardista’ and receiving a compliment from Simon every week- that’s almost worth the price of subscription in itself. I gave it 3 months but I’ve unsubscribed. The live BBC show had spontaneity and audience interaction. The USP was the rapport between the hosts and their connection with their audience, built over decades. This feels forced, rigid and (badly) scripted. No humour or spontaneity. It’s difficult...Read full review »

I loved them on the radio & listened for years. Initially I paid the subscription for the bonus material but IMO the chemistry is not the same anymore & I got fed up with Mark slagging me off for my beliefs - mainly knowing that men can’t be women - & paying for the privilege. Have seen some complaints about the subscription… but why shouldn’t we pay creators? A great pod that has kept the same BBC standards… long may it continue. The Extra Takes are great, too! Sometimes at it’s best when not even talking film.
Garry Hayes via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 06/08/23
The main sticking point is the subscription that now comes with Mark and Simon. It wouldn’t bother me so much having specific features and conversations on there for that bit extra. Disappointed in the take, suppose it’s all about the money at this stage in their careers. I enjoyed the BBC podcast, but think I’ll move on to something more dynamic and less boring.
Deb in KL via Apple Podcasts · Australia · 05/26/23
I would rate it higher if it wasn’t for the fact that it was so much better in the BBC days. The dynamic between Mark and Simon is still good but the previous structure which was centred around the radio show has gone leaving it rather dishevelled. I have been listening since 2004. I think the quality of the show, its eponymous hosts, the production team, the quality of the interviews, pretty much speaks for itself. Awesome. Just awesome.
