After years of living the highest of highs, Steve Soutee spent much of the 1990s trying to stay out of prison. When he wasn't able to come up with the agreed upon funds to keep him out of prison after just 120 days, Steve was forced to plead his case in front of the judge, and hope that a smaller amount of money with the promise of paying back more would keep him out of harm's way. Episode contains the real transcripts from the January 8, 1998 hearing.

This is the transcript I transcribed from the Lawrence County Courthouse, provided via open records request. It is a little unusual because I had to synch up the recording to play at the correct speed. It is not complete, but it was what I had to work with, and certainly gives the best opportunity to hear Steve talk and hear him plead his own case.

This episode is my unedited interview with Red Stephens. He was a very nice man, and I was struck just by how completely his life was taken on the same night as Officer Mallot. It is clear to me that Red Stephens would be a totally normal and law-abiding citizen if he were allowed to go free, but he sits with more than a decade to go on his sentence.
